Whirlwind Secrets Page 25
“I love you, too.” She pulled him down for a kiss. “And I may have a solution.”
“What?” He feathered kisses against her temple.
She laid something on his desk. When she moved her hand, Russ saw her sister’s earrings and watch. They gleamed in the white gaslight. “I can sell these.”
His gaze shot to hers. “Absolutely not. No.”
“Russ.” She grasped his face. “This is the answer.”
“That’s all you have left of your sister.”
“And if you don’t pay the bank, you won’t have anything left. You’re willing to give up everything for me. I’m willing to do that, too.”
“But—”
She placed her fingers over his mouth. “Nothing would be more perfect than knowing my sister’s things helped you. Please?”
He rested his forehead against hers, finally saying, “If I accept your offer, you have to accept mine.”
“Not without hearing it first.”
He grinned. “Well, Madam Businesswoman, I want to help you with the operation.”
“Really?”
The pleasure warming her eyes had him pulling her closer. “I figure the only way to ensure you’ll let me do that is for me to become your husband.”
Lydia’s jaw dropped. Had he just proposed to her?
Russ chuckled. “I’ll take that as a ‘yes.’ You can’t get out of it now.”
She blinked, her heart achingly full.
He turned serious. “I’ve waited a long time for someone like you to come along, sugar.”
She felt the same about him. She smiled, brushing a soft kiss against his lips. “So if I take your offer, you’ll take mine?”
“Yes, but you have to go first, a show of good faith and all that.”
“No more secrets,” she vowed.
“Well, maybe a couple.” He lightly grazed his fingertip near her bruised jaw then murmured against her lips, “Just between us.”
“Mmm, this might be the best deal I’ve ever made.”
“I aim to make sure it is.”
